A few kilometers from Tarvisio lie the well-known lakes of Fusine, well worth a visit. Of glacial nature, the two main basins are located at different altitudes, the upper feeding the lower with underground streams, the latter flowing in turn into an artificially regulated outflowing river. Immersed in thick vegetation and dominated by a steep crown of high ridges that is reflected in it (especially in the more crystalline lower lake), they form powerfully suggestive scenarios, which represent an easy to reach and satisfying naturalistic destination. Swimming there is strictly forbidden; besides, the waters are rather cold, as it is one of the places in Italy where the coldest temperatures are reached in winter. However, regulated fishing is allowed, and in the lower lake you can rent small boats to sail about its surface. Hikes departure from the lakes leading to excursions of varying length and difficulty: along paths in the surrounding woods, towards the arduous alpine paths of the limestone ramparts or, along a cobbled driveway, to the Luigi Zacchi mountain cabin, occasionally accessible in winter too.
